Bernie Sanders is on the losing side
of the Democratic primaries. He wants to stay on and debate Joe Biden this coming
Sunday. I think it is a divisive move, but I respect his decision. But my opinion
about his campaign is very clear. Soon after the next round and if there is no
miracle, he should acknowledge Biden’s victory and move out of the race. His
continuation in the primaries can become a distraction. A serious one, when the
objective is to gain enough leverage to beat President Trump.

Bloomberg's poor beginning
Michael
Bloomberg might have learned a key lesson last night, when assessing his performance
during the Nevada Democratic Debate: a presidential race in the United States is
a complex matter. It is not enough to have money, plenty of it. One also needs
to convince the voters and, above all, to be perceived as presidential
material. To be an extremely successful businessperson is not enough. The race is
about representativeness and political banners. It is also about emotions and the
capacity to create a few great ideals.
Bloomberg
came out of the debate weaker. He must find a flame within himself to be able
to recover the ground he lost. Unfortunately, money cannot buy that inner fire he
seems to lack.

Impeached
I
am impressed by the presentations made so far by the House Impeachment Managers.
They are building a serious case against President Trump. It is smart to
repeatedly quote statements proffered in past occasions by those that today are
dead against the impeachment.
We
all know that the case will be dismissed in the end, because the President’s party
will decide along partisan lines. Their decision is to protect the President,
independently of the merits of the case. And the President, then, will try to
ride on that acquittal and move to a higher gear in terms of his re-election
campaign. OK, it’s expected, it is part of the political game. He will take a discernible
advantage of his malpractices. But the Democrats had no other option but to
impeach. Today, more than ever, it is important to act based on principles.

Italy must reform soon
Giuseppe
Conte is back as head of the new Italian government. Not a very easy task that of
chairing a coalition between the 5-Star Movement and the PD (Democratic Party,
a social-democrat party). They can stay in power for three years, until the end
of the current Parliament. They can also fall apart soon. Nobody knows. What we
know is that the new government – Conte II – has many divisive issues to deal
with. The country is not in a very good shape, to put it diplomatically. It
calls for serious reforms. Those reforms require consensus within the
coalition, a very wise approach and lots of political courage. In addition,
many people think that Matteo Salvini, the League’s leader, is a better option,
that he is the one that can transform Italy. He is not, in my opinion, but what
matters is the Italian voters’ views. He will be leading the opposition against
this new government. In the end, if Italy does not address its problems – and I
have serious doubts it will – Salvini might end up back in power again. And
bring with him the image of a strong and resolute man. That would be a game
changer. Certainly not a good one, in the end, but it would be too late to stop
him.
